Job retention scheme - how to claim

Michael Chadwick, founding Director at Chadwick & Company, gives further information the Government's job retention scheme.

HMRC have officially opened their job retention scheme today. In advance of the opening, the Government announced some important changes:

As you prepare to make a claim, please note:

  • The online claim service has been today (20 April 2020). Claims made by 22 April will be paid by 30 April.
  • The only way to make a claim is online – the service should be simple to use and any support you need available on GOV.UK; this will include help with calculating the amount you can claim.
  • Firms can make the claim yourself even if you usually use an agent.
  • Claims will be paid within six working days.
  • Businesses will need a Government Gateway ID and password. This can be obtained by going on GOV.UK and searching for ‘HMRC services: sign in or register'.
  • Employers will also need to be enrolled for PAYE online. Again this can be done by going to GOV.UK and searching for 'PAYE Online for employers'.
